B.M. – Music Education, University of Texas at San Antonio
About Me:
Christian Castillo is currently an Assistant Band Director and Assistant Director of Percussion at Sheldon ISD. He currently oversees the curriculum and instructions for percussion at both Null and CE King Middle School and assists with all the marching arts at CE King High School. In addition to teaching, Mr. Castillo spends his time composing, arranging, and creating sound designs for numerous marching and indoor percussion groups and is an active clinician for multiple schools in the surrounding Houston area.
Through the years, his students have achieved great success which includes top placements in the TMEA Regions bands, 1st division Ratings in UIL Solo and Ensemble, and even becoming state finalists for the Texas Color Guard Circuit (TCGC). In the time Mr. Castillo spends with his students, he finds it very important to consistently mentor them to become disciplined, high-achieving, respectable young adults.
Christian was born and raised in Brownsville, Texas. He attended Lopez Early College High School under the direction of both George Trevino and Harvey Bermudez. During his time here, he achieved top 3 placements in the All-Region Bands and All-Region Orchestras. He also participated in the Lopez High School Indoor Percussion program from 2007-2011 where they became Open-Class Champions multiple times in the Texas Educators Colorguard Association (TECA). In addition to his time there, the Lobo Marching Band was a UIL State Marching Band and Bands of America contestant and Honor Band finalist.
After his time in Lopez, Christian moved to San Antonio and received his degree in Music Education from the University of Texas at San Antonio. In the years he attended UTSA, Christian competed with UTSA Indoor and performed at PASIC 2015 with Robert Chappell, Liam Teague, and the UTSA Steel Drum Ensemble. In 2016, Christian became one of the charter members of the UTSA study abroad program in Italy. He had the pleasure of studying Jazz Vibraphone under Marco Pacassoni, a former student of Gary Burton.
During his time in San Antonio, Mr. Castillo was also an active Sea World San Antonio performer. During his time there, he assisted in co-creating multiple musical shows and took part in creating and opening new shows in the theme park. Here, Mr. Castillo gained experience as an actor, dancer, percussionist, stilt performer, and costume character for several shows. Most of Mr. Castillo’s creative influences come from his experiences here.
Christian currently lives in Houston, Texas. In his spare time, he enjoys golfing, biking, pickleball, reading books and exploring new places.
Christian Castillo is a current endorser of Salyers Drum Sticks and Encore Mallets.
