Mr. Ronnie Ross, Assistant Band Director
I was born in Abilene, Texas (West Texas), but I refer to Lufkin, TX (East Texas) as my “hometown” because that is where I went to high school and college. Music has been important in my life for as long as I can remember. I have vivid memories of seeing performances of the Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra and the Nutcracker Ballet when I was in elementary school. These live music performances encouraged me to join the band when I was in 6th grade.
My main instrument is the tuba. In middle school and high school I earned many first division ratings on solos and ensembles. I earned a spot in the All-City Band in seventh grade. In High school, I earned a spot in the Region band all four years and I made the State band my senior year. These experiences are what led to me ultimately majoring in Music at Stephen F. Austin State University after high school. I auditioned for the School of Music and the rest is history! I earned a music scholarship based on my audition and an academic scholarship for being in the top 10% of my graduating class.
I started teaching in 2007 at Hudson Middle School in Lufkin, TX. While at Hudson ISD, I was the Associate Director of Bands and worked with students in grades 6 – 12. After nine years, I arrived in Sheldon ISD as the Assistant Band Director at C. E. King High School. I worked at KHS for two years working with the Mighty Panther Marching Band, Symphonic Band and Jazz Band. In 2018, I transferred to my current position as the Assistant Band Director at Null Middle School.
Fun fact: I lived in Scotland (the country, not Scotland, TX) and I began learning how to play the bagpipes because they did not have a tuba for me to play.
